MDCC Round 2 Completion Wrap 18/10/14
D6’s season got underway this week playing Moe’s Tavern. Losing the toss and fielding first Moe’s Tavern finished 7 for 130 off their 35 overs and in our lads run chase we fell short managing 8 for 109 off 35 overs. (Statistics to come soon)
This Week our D5’s played Kotara. After winning the toss this week boys and electing to bat the guys had a good day out batting the allotted overs. Finishing 3 for 191 there where alot of contributions with Michael Sharp (67*), Daniel Crossley (57*), Luke Pankhurst (28) & Robert Pollock (26)
Kotara insured that the full amount of overs for the day would be bowled but with D5’s bowling effort they kept them below the total required finishing 8 for 152. Pick of the bowlers this week and having an all round good day Crossley (3 for 31) and Pollock (2 for 24).
Playing Carrington Gravity Riders this week our B5’s lost the toss and where put into bat on what appears to be a tricky wicket with regular wickets falling the guys only managed 9 for 124 off their 35 overs with Michael Varnum (76) being the only batter to tame the pitch.
During Carringtons innings our B5’s gave a good fight but were chased down with only 1 over to spare. Carrington ended 5 for 128. Drew Varnum (2 for 15) was the pick of the bowlers.
The A grade boys won a very tight game against the journeyman scoring the winning run of the last ball of the day 9 wickets down. With 4 runs to win and 4 wickets in hand we thought we would give our manager a heart attack by losing 3/0 but young Rohan Davis and not so young Lyle McGuigan (28no) got us home. Darren Cousins top scored for the second week in a row with 54 and Lyle McGuigan most wickets with 4/22, Neil Crittenden also chipped in with 2 for 25.
Journeyman 10/138 V Merewether 9/139
Setting University 299 to chase this week the young 4th grade side got off to a solid start having Uni down 5 for 127 but playing on Sports ground number 6 it is a ground where defending a total can be a difficult one and Uni where able to put on a few late partnerships completing the run chase 8 down for 303. With a few more chances going to hand this game could have easily gone our way but there are plenty of good signs with pick of the bowler being Ryan Mitchison (3 for 53).
2nd week at Ray Watt Oval and with a few over night showers saw our 3rd grade starting an hour later than scheduled, This saw a loss of 15 overs giving our guys 55 overs to complete in the day. The pitch turned out to be a difficult one for both batters and bowlers and with Uni still needing another 211 with 8 wickets in hand the only way for our boys to win was to bowl Uni out.
All of our bowlers kept putting in and kept striving to keep the pressure building but Uni did not give up the fight ether this making for a great game of cricket from both teams. The game ended up going down to the 2nd last over of the day where the final wicket fell with the boys getting up by just 9 runs. Best bowlers on the day where Jake Miller (3 for 33), Daryl Daniels (3 for 47) & Grant Smith (2 for 70). A great effort in the field helped get us this win, well done to all.
Uni Started the day 0 for 68 needing only 149 more runs but as we know our 2nd graders don’t know how to quit and competed in the only way we have come to expect. With a fine bowling display the guys where able to take first innings points taking 10 wickets for 72 on the day restricting Uni to 140. Pick of the bowlers Tommy Croft (4 for 20), Simon Wall (4 for 77) and Sam Palmer (2 for 12).
After playing on stumps where called at Tea with us 1 for 32.
After a week that saw more wickets in a day then some see in a match its was interesting to see what would come of week 2. Having a lead of 143 and 9 wickets in hand the wickets continued to fall regularly with Ben Egan (32) and Sam Gilmour (30) being the biggest contributors in the 2nd innings the guys were able to finish on 147, leaving Uni to chase 245 to win in 53 overs.
The final innings Uni showed more resistance holding off the out-right win for our lads by 1 wicket. The wickets where shared around with Tim O’Neil (4 for 44), Harry Colbert (2 for 28) & Courtney Moulton (2 for 32). Uni finished 9 for 167.
Great work again this week keep working on the little things and big results will continue to come our way.
